Margarita de Jamaica

Hibiscus Margarita with Baja Fleur de Sel

A Mexican Classic with a Floral and Artisanal Touch

The Margarita is, without a doubt, one of Mexico's most iconic cocktails. Refreshing, vibrant, and perfectly balanced between citrus, sweet, and spirited notes, it has captivated palates worldwide for decades.

While there are various stories about its origin, most agree that it was born between Mexico and the US border during the 1930s and 1940s. Some attribute its creation to a woman named Margarita, while others contend that it evolved from the classic Daisy cocktail, whose name in Spanish translates precisely to "Margarita."

In this special version, Sal de Baja Flor de la Vida brings a completely new dimension. Its delicate minerality enhances the flavors of tequila and citrus, while hibiscus adds an attractive ruby color, elegant natural acidity, and a subtle floral aroma that transforms each sip into a gourmet experience.

Ingredients

For 1 cocktail

  • 60 ml 100% agave tequila blanco

  • 30 ml orange liqueur (Cointreau or Triple Sec)

  • 30 ml freshly squeezed lime juice

  • 15 ml concentrated hibiscus infusion

  • Sal de Baja Flor de la Vida for rimming the glass

  • Ice

  • Lime slice for garnish

  • Dehydrated hibiscus flower (optional)

For the hibiscus infusion

  • 2 tablespoons dried hibiscus flowers

  • 250 ml hot water

How to prepare the hibiscus infusion

Place the hibiscus flowers in hot water and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain and let cool completely before use. For a more intense and concentrated flavor, you can slightly reduce the infusion over low heat.

Preparation

1. Rim the glass

Run a lime slice around the rim of a Margarita glass or an old fashioned glass. Then, gently place it on a plate with Sal de Baja Flor de la Vida until an even layer is obtained.

2. Mix the ingredients

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add the tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, and hibiscus infusion.

3. Shake

Shake vigorously for 15 seconds until the mixture is perfectly chilled.

4. Serve

Fill the prepared glass with fresh ice and strain the mixture over it.

5. Garnish

Add a lime slice or a dehydrated hibiscus flower for an elegant and aromatic visual detail.

The result

The first contact comes through the rimmed edge with Sal de Baja Flor de la Vida, which provides a delicate minerality and enhances the natural aromas of the cocktail.

Then, the fresh and citrus notes of lime appear, followed by the characteristic depth of tequila. Finally, the hibiscus brings a floral, slightly acidic, and refreshing finish that lingers pleasantly on the palate.

The result is a sophisticated, balanced, and visually spectacular Margarita, ideal for enjoying on a summer afternoon, a seaside dinner, or any special occasion.

The role of Sal de Baja Flor de la Vida

Flor de la Vida is one of the most delicate expressions of artisanal sea salt. Its light crystals and mineral profile enhance flavors without overpowering them, providing texture, balance, and elegance.

In this recipe, each crystal acts as a natural enhancer of the ingredients, creating a more complex and refined experience than a traditional Margarita.

Recommended pairing

This Margarita pairs especially well with:

  • Fresh fish ceviche

  • Shrimp tostadas

  • Green aguachile

  • Baja-style fish tacos

  • Fresh oysters

  • Soft cheese and citrus fruit platter

Sal de Baja Tip

For an even more special presentation, mix a small amount of dehydrated hibiscus powder with Sal de Baja Flor de la Vida before rimming the glass. You will get a natural pink rim that provides an elegant visual contrast and a light additional floral nuance.
